Vintage Nandi Vibhooti Box

This is a fine vintage Nandi vibhooti(holy ash) from Andhra Pradesh. The piece is quite different from the other pieces we have brought to you before. This one has 4 Nandi's on all the four corners of the box and a small Lingam at the front. Also this piece comes on wheels which probably was done to enable easier movement of the box across its devotees. All Nandi vibhooti boxes like this one are Shaivite ceremonial pieces. The piece is over 80 years old and makes a great collectible.

This is a vintage Shaivite vibhooti (holy ash) box, estimated to be over 80 years old, originating from Andhra Pradesh. Traditionally used in temples or household shrines, such boxes were intended to store and dispense vibhooti, a sacred ash used in daily Shaivite rituals.

The box is crafted from wood and features four sculpted Nandi figures placed at each corner. Nandi, the sacred bull and mount of Lord Shiva, symbolizes devotion and vigilance. A small representation of a Shiva Lingam is positioned prominently at the front, reinforcing its ceremonial function. Unlike typical static boxes, this piece is mounted on small wheels—a rare feature—suggesting it may have been designed for mobility during religious processions or for shared ritual use among devotees.

This functional yet symbolic object reflects the devotional practices of rural and temple communities in South India. Its construction, iconography, and aged patina make it a distinctive collectible for those interested in Shaivite material culture.
